When Ani Difranco released her debut album in 1990, there was no mistaking her mission. From the beginning, Ani has focused on feminism and social justice, although in more recent years, she's also developed a strong environmentalist bent. Her hugely successful independent record label is considerably active in their local community in Buffalo, New York, assisting local small businesses and other causes important to the community. They've recently relocated to an historical church building, which they saved from demolition and then restored in environmentally friendly ways.

Ani was also honored in 2006 by the National Organization of Women for her efforts in furthering the feminist movement. But aside from her work as a devout activist for the environment, civil rights, feminism and LGBT rights, she's also focused on all these things in her songwriting.A consummate poet, songwriter, activist, and artist, Difranco has rarely, if ever, distinguished her personal politics from her professional path. As a result, she's managed to inspire a slew of young girls to action.
