As compilation CDs go, this is a pretty darn good one. Folks who are just learning about bluegrass and its artists, or those who have always been curious about the genre will be well-served in picking up a copy of this little gem. It features artists from greats like The Cox Family to newer crowds like Open Road. While the sounds differ from band to band, the artists on Bluegrass Hits offer an excellent representation of all the good music out there.

Guide Review - Bluegrass Hits: Twenty Timeless Favorites from Yesterday and Today

Everyone loves getting mix CDs from their friends, and Rounder Records has pretty much mastered the art of the mix CD with their discography of compilations.

Newest on this list is Bluegrass Hits: Twenty Timeless Favorites from Yesterday and Today. I have a real soft spot for The Cox Family, but their hit, "Everybody's Reaching Out for Someone," is definitely the most shining moment on this compilation. Other highlights include the great mandolin solo (and everything else) in Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder's "Little Maggie," and the so-what heartbreak ballad, "My First Mistake," by Alecia Nugent.

If you're familiar with these artists, you probably already own most of these tunes. What compilations are great for is introducing new fans of a particular genre to an array of artists that fall under that label. In this case, Rounder has done a swell job of amassing an impressive list of important bluegrassers.

Overall, this CD is a great place to start if you've heard the buzz surrounding Alison Krauss & Union Station or Open Road, and are looking to expand your familiarity with the bluegrass world. It's like having your own personal bluegrass festival right in the comfort and quiet of your own home.
