On Alison Krauss' debut back in 1987, she entered onto the scene as one of the greatest new fiddle talents around.
Too Late to Cry certainly showcases her skills on her instrument, particularly on the instrumental
"Dusty Miller", with its tight, fast arpeggios that step aside now and then to make way for some excellent banjo solos.
She also shows off her excellent ballad singing skills, though her voice is more focused in the middle and lower reaches of its range on tunes like "Gentle River". While these tunes are well sung, they don't showcase the inimitably lovely soprano where Krauss' voice so comfortably sits today. There's more of a huskiness to her tone, as if she's reaching too hard for notes and her voice hasn't yet fully matured. That said, with tunes like "Sleep On" and "Don't Follow Me", it was clear even then that Krauss had enough talent to stick around for a long time to come.
