Dar Williams' "Echoes Initiative"

By Kim Ruehl, About.com

My Better Self (Razor & Tie, 2005)

As Dar Williams' fans pour out to her shows this autumn, in select cities, they will find local community-based charities set up in the lobby. It won't just be the typical charity-table-at-a-Folk-concert, though. Dar will hold press conferences ahead of time in each city to announce which charity will be featured, and to inform the local community about the work in which each organization participates.

In addition to promoting the organization personally, Dar will invite the local and national media to publicize each charity. A select amount of tickets to each show, which will include priority seating and a reception, will be sold at a premium price, with all proceeds over face value going to chairty.

According to her record company, it's not the first time Williams has reached out for social causes. Every year during her birthday, she donates a week's worth of concert proceeds to an organization of her choice.

The Echoes Initiative was inspired by the song "Echoes" (from her new CD My Better Self), in which she sings, "Every time you open to kindness, make one connection used to divide us, it echoes all over the world."
