Holiday-Themed Song of the Day:
"Happy Christmas (War is Over)" by John Lennon & Yoko Ono. This song quickly became a classic when it was released in 1972, at the height of the American involvement in Vietnam. But it has just as much of an affect when it's played now, and the simple, lovely Christmas carol gives way to the refrain: "War is over, if you want it ..."
Strange Christmas Factoid:
Considering the puritanism that had swept America and Britain until the 1800s, the Christmas Tree was not considered an acceptable way of celebrating the Christmas holiday. When, in 1846, Queen Victoria was pictured in a London newspaper standing in front of her Christmas tree, this tradition finally became fashionable.
Holiday Tradition of the Day:
In Finland, it's customary to visit a sauna on Christmas eve. Many folks also listen to a special radio show called "Peace of Christmas," while others will visit the graves of their relatives who have passed away.
Gift of the Day:
The John Fahey Christmas Album (Burnside, 1991). This CD from guitar great John Fahey features his serious acoustic guitar skills on some truly fabulous Christmas classics.
