Have Yourself a Folky Little Christmas, Day 17

By , About.com Guide

Holiday-Themed Song of the Day:

"Christmas in Virginia" by Lost and Found from Christmas in the Mountains (Rebel, 2003).

Strange Christmas Factoid:

After the American Revolution, the new nation poo-pooed all British traditions, including Christmas, which didn't become popular in America until the middle of the 19th century. In fact, in 1789, Congress remained in session on Christmas day as they worked on drafting the Constitution.

Holiday Tradition of the Day:

The American minister to Mexico was named Joel R. Poinsett. During a trip to Mexico in 1828, he got a red and green plant there, which he brought with him back to the US. The plant became known as a Poinsettia, named after Mr. Poinsett. By 1870, the fashionable stores in New York were selling them as a Christmas decoration.

Gift of the Day:

A Putumayo Christmas (Putumayo, 1994). Putumayo is known for putting out comprehensive primer CD compilations that'll introduce you to great folk music from around the world. This Christmas-themed CD includes players from both Folk and Blues.
