Definition: Sure, it's a fire you light at a camp, but in the folk world (particularly at folk festivals), it's even more than that. A campfire is an opportunity for folksingers to gather around and share their songs with one another. It's also a great time for impromptu jam sessions and collaborations.
The campfires at festivals, like Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, are frequented by novices and professionals alike. It's a great opportunity to hear songs that haven't been recorded yet (and may never be). Often these song swaps also help introduce up-and-comers to a whole new audience. In my opinion, campfires are oftentimes the coolest thing to do at folk festivals.
