I can't really speak to the eating granola and wearing sandals thing. Honestly, there are plenty of folksingers who enjoy doing both. But, there are certainly plenty of folk artists who don't fit into either of those categories. I guarantee if you ran into members of the Asylum Street Spankers or even the Carter Family on the street, you wouldn't think of them as granola-eating hippies.

Indeed, one of the most common misconceptions about folk music is that there aren't many minorities making it. That's of course not true. Learn more about African-American folk music and some of the most notable African-American folk artists.
