Here's your guide to Falcon Ridge Folk Festival 2008. It should be easy to figure out which big-named artists you want to check out. But, what lesser-known artists should you not miss this year? Here are my top five recommendations.
Anthony da Costa
Anthony da Costa was one of the most impressive up-and-coming artists I encountered at the Folk Alliance conference in February. Da Costa may only be 17, but his music is wise beyond his years. He'll be playing every single day of the festival, so he shouldn't be too hard to catch. Just follow all the other people buzzing about that kid with the great earnest songs.

Crooked Still
This young Boston-based progressive bluegrass band has been tearing it up. While they're a little better known than the other "up-and-comers" on the bill, they're definitely worth making mandatory on your Falcon Ridge schedule this year. Their three albums have all been very well-received by critics and fans alike, and their live show is undeniably energetic. They'll only be making an appearance at the festival on Thursday night, so don't miss it!

Lindsay Mac
Last year, Falcon Ridge festivarians voted Lindsay Mac the most wanted artist from the Emerging Artist showcase, so she's back this year. If you missed her last year, or you're not privy to her work, you don't want to miss her this time around. Luckily, she'll be there all weekend, so you'll have plenty of opportunities.

Randall Williams
Randall Williams was another big Folk Alliance find for me. I kept happening upon his sets in the guerilla showcases, and I enjoyed every minute of them. His songs call to mind John Gorka and David Grey, and his live performances are the sort that will just make you smile. He's also playing every day, so pace yourself.

The Strangelings
Maura and Pete Kennedy are hardly up-and-comers, but their band the Strangelings is fairly new to the scene. Based on the great songwriting and musicianship of the Kennedys and their all-star band of collaborators, the Strangelings just make great music, plain and simple. They'll be at this year's Falcon Ridge Folk Festival every single day, so make sure to make some time for one of their sets.
