Guide Review - Zoe Lewis - Small is Tremendous
You may know Lewis from the northeast folk festivals. Her live sets are freckled with fun and laughter, in between which she sneaks some seriously lovely sentimental songs. However, unlike so many performers who are great live, Lewis' work actually translates rather fantastically to recording. Her band of warbling musicians (more commonly known as Her Rubber Band) are covetably tight, not distracting for a moment from Lewis' languid melodies and poetic lyrics.
Her songs are one minute fresh and intuitive, the next silly and childishly sincere. On "Banana Moon," for example, she sings about a terrifically romantic evening, punctuating the chorus with a description of the night as being "like all the favorite things / that Julie Andrews sings."
Lewis is a variant master of most world music forms, tackling everything from bayou cajun to tango, jazz, and narrative American folk. Anybody who listens to music for an excuse to shake, bounce, and boogie will love Lewis' new record, as will anyone who looks for honest, poignant stories about the human experience.
