The Bottom Line

The Weepies have mastered the integration of everything that makes a song good. Say I Am You is absolutely wrought with intuitively poetic lyrics, calm and easy vocals, and hooks so catchy you sing along without realizing you're doing it.

A lot of these songs are about love and relationships, but Talan and Tannen tackle the age-old art of the love song with some of the most charming, earnest lyrics and melodies available.

Pros
  • "Gotta Have You"
  • "Painting By Chagall"
  • "Nobody Knows Me At All"
  • "World Spins Madly On"
  • "Stars"
Cons
  • None.

Description

  • A lovely marriage of work by two great singer/songwriters
  • Pretty, catchy, intuitive folk-pop songs
  • Subtly intoxicating songs of love and longing

Guide Review - The Weepies - Say I Am You

Say I Am You (the title) comes from a verse by the poet Rumi, which refers to the oneness of all things. It's a poetic title in itself, but as you listen to The Weepies' lovely second album, you start to realize that this canon of love songs are all beckoning for a lover to "say I am you."

From the very beginning of the record, the lyrics reflect on a love relationship so good, it leaves the songwriter longing for more: "what can i compare you to when everything looks like you?"

The strongest songs on the record come right in the middle with a one-two punch of "Painting by Chagall" and "Nobody Knows Me At All."

On "Painting by Chagall," Talan's small, subtle voice sings a melody so catchy it'll haunt you for hours: "You're the moon, I'm the water ... we float like two lovers in a painting by Chagall." This is followed by the so-what resignation of "Nobody Knows Me At All": "I got lots of friends, yes, but then again, nobody knows me at all."

Considering Tannen and Talan were making fantastic music in their own rites as solo artists, it's no surprise that their efforts together are no less than stunning. Say I Am You is not for folk traditionalists, but it would be near impossible to not become infected by The Weepies' subtly intoxicating folk-pop melodies.
