Guide Review - Sonya Kitchell - Words Come Back To Me
When a sisteen-year-old compiles twelve songs that she wrote and played, generally the result is something along the lines of mainstream formulaic pop music that apes the songs she's hearing on MTV and her local top 40 radio.Sonya Kitchell, however, comes at us with twelve songs of absolute earnest newness. Her voice may sound a little like the big soul of Joss Stone. Her melodies and piano playing may be somewhat similar to that of Norah Jones and Fiona Apple combined, but that doesn't make Kitchell a carbon copy of these other successful young women.
Particularly on song #2, "Train," Kitchell works a unique syncopated series of instrumentation under what sounds more like a poem set to music - all about her experiences during one day on the subway.
With "Jerry," she showcases the wisdom that reaches beyond her years, relaying the story of a broken relationship and a woman who goes out looking for something better than a working class life.
Considering this is just a first effort from this intuitive songwriter, it will be exciting to see how her future unfolds within her music. For now, though, at least we can enjoy these wonderful songs.
