Guide Review - Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac
Black Cadillacs title track starts with Johnny Cash's voice saying, "Rosanne, come on." From there, the tune unrolls about the black Cadillac that drove her legendary father to his grave. Cashs acoustic guitar plays a whole two chords, but by the end of the song, there's an eerie interweaving of synthesizer, drums, and two chord guitar that only a Cash could make work.I'd be hard pressed to review this record without calling to mind the obvious influences of Cash's father and stepmother (June Carter). After all, the CD includes a note from Rosanne about how she wrote the CD after having lost two mothers (Carter, as well as her birth mother, Viviane Liberto Cash) and her father in one year.
Still, when it comes to describing great songs, there are few words that really work. Cash doesn't waste her time on trying to create poetry with flowery language. Her songs are stories, and their narratives are clear and concise. There are simple lyrics that go nowhere, and then there are simple lyrics that move into your heart and send chills radiating. Cash has a clear mastery of the latter, no matter what she's singing about.
Whether you want to sit alone and cry, take a long drive, or find some great roots rock, alt.country, or straight up folk-rock for the background, Rosanne Cash is your gal.
