Guide Review - Various Artists - City Folk Live 9 (WFUV)

WFUV is, arguably, one of the American radio stations with the best taste in music. For the past nine years, they've been releasing an annual CD compiling songs from their packed-with-impeccable-taste collection, and City Folk Live 9 is no exception. If anything, it surely doesn't shame the eight records that preceded it.

The disc kicks off with a heart-grabbing tune by David Grey called "The One I Love," which is followed by a little jazz-blues from James Hunter ("No Smoke Without Fire"). From there, the CD twists and turns through subgenres of Americana, with mostly folk-rock from artists like Rosanne Cash, Brandi Carlile, Sonya Kitchell, and Ben Harper. Tossed in for good measure are legends like T Bone Burnett and Alejandro Escovedo and newcomers like Josh Ritter.

You can't really go wrong with this line-up, but, as already stated, this is WFUV we're talking about—the radio station you would've loved to be friends with when you were 13, because they make the best mix tapes.

WFUV doesn't mess around with genre. As this CD can testify, the folks at Fordham University's radio station are more concerned with great songs, and there are plenty of them on this disc.

Turn the lights down low, light some candles, grab a smokey merlot, and crank up City Folk Live 9, an excellent companion for dark, dreary winter days. Even better if you've just been dumped, or find yourself pining over unrequited love. Where else can you go for such an amalgam of the year's best songs all in one place at one time?
