Now this is fresh! Remix Bob Dylan 's 1965 classic, “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” and you could win a trip for two to the 2011 SXSW music showcase in Austin, Texas.
In January 1965, Dylan recorded “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” his first-ever electric song release. In what many consider the first music video of all time, “Subterranean Homesick Blues” is featured as the opening scene in D.A. Pennebaker's 1967 black-and-white film, Don't Look Back, with Dylan tossing away hand-written cards in synch with the soundtrack.
Forty-five years later, Sony invites fans to join in the Remix Project and take a crack at remixing Dylan's vintage anti-establishment anthem. And it doesn't get any easier. With a drag-and-drop editing app, the original drum, guitar, bass, and vocal tracks are separated so that users can splice them together to create up to 24 screens of audio-visual content. For the first time, the public can deconstruct Dylan's song and hear the layers separately, then reconstruct them with their own vision. Contestants can mix in dozens of tracks provided by various artists, or if they'd like, can incorporate their own media.
The Gist
There are two competitions: The “Contest” and the “Sweepstakes.” The contest is the actual remix competition, while the sweepstakes is for those who vote on the remixes at Sony's Facebook page. The contest begins on December 20, 2010, and contestants may enter as many remixes as they'd like until January 20, 2011, when a panel of judges will select 10 semi-finalists, whose remixes will appear on the contest Facebook page.
The voting then begins on January 24, running through February 4. You can vote as often as you'd like, however only the first entry counts towards the sweepstakes. After the voting ends on February 11, the top-three most popular remixes will be named as finalists. The grand prize winner will then be selected by another panel of judges.
The Prizes
The Contest grand prize is tickets, plus airfare and hotel for two to the 2011 South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas from March 16-20. Twenty-four additional contest entrants will receive a copy of either the Bob Dylan Bootleg Series, Vol. 9: The Witmark Demos, 1962-1964 compilation, or The Original Mono Recordings box set.
For the Sweepstakes, 10 entries will be randomly drawn on February 7 to receive $100 Sony Style gift cards.
