Since I'm originally from the east coast and have spent the majority of my life on that side of the country, the western festivals are new to me. This year, I got the pleasure of attending several, and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park was by far one of the best.

I was conferencing with my fellow About.com guides for much of the weekend, so I missed performances from Gillian Welch, Jerry Douglas and Elvis Costello, among others, though everyone I asked had nothing but praise to give each.

I did manage to catch Ramblin' Jack Elliot, who was absolutely spellbinding. Other incredible sets came from Hazel Dickens, Iris DeMent and Tim O'Brien. The best thing about this festival is that admission is completely free. Many weekend-long festivals charge admission, which can border on far-too-expensive sometimes, particularly when traveling to another city or town to check out the festival. The lack of admission charges at HSB make it definitely worth a trek to San Francisco for a beautiful Indian summer weekend in October.
