I discovered Mare Wakefield through Pandora online radio, and was instantly drawn to her style, which is a little bit old country, and a lot of contemporary folk music ala Dar Williams or Patty Griffin. Wakefield, a resident of Nashville, sings frankly about her struggle with eating disorders ("Barbie"), and other important topics, as well as life on the road and the occasional good, old fashioned love song.
I had the pleasure of sharing a show with Mare in Bellingham, Wash., and discovered she's just as much of a great performer as her recordings would indicate. Her laid-back, personable onstage presence is an asset to her lovely voice and even lovelier songs. Definitely an artist to not miss.
Mare Wakefield will spend part of June, 2007, on a European tour. Check her MySpace site for more info.
