The most recent entry in the seemingly never-ending Ani DiFranco CD catalog is Reprieve—an album most pointedly addressing the Bush administration, the aftermath of 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina. DiFranco recorded most of this at home in New Orleans before having to evacuate the day before Hurricane Katrina. She and bassist Todd Sickafoose finished up remotely from their respective homes (Difranco back in Buffalo), and the result is a really excellent topical disc.
Here, DiFranco moves between political tunes like "Decree" and "Millenium Theater," and more personal observational tunes like "Hypnotized" and "78% Water." This long-awaited disc followed her months-long hiatus as her hands and wrists healed from tendonitis, and preceeded the announcement of another months-long hiatus to become a mother. Probably the best moment on the album comes during the title track—a poem reminding listeners of the importance of feminism.
