It's hard to believe it's been so long since this record came out. When people complain that Ani DiFranco isn't doing "enough" political songs these days, chances are the record they're referencing is Not So Soft. The title track is a particularly biting poem for The Man, and the rest of this record addresses pretty much everything from AIDS to war and Difranco's now famous refusal of major label recording contracts.
There are also plenty of tender love songs here, like "She Says" and CD bonus track (ah, remember cassettes?) "Brief Bus Stop."
