Knuckle Down came at a time when Ani DiFranco had begun touring solo again, and was moving away a bit from all the breakup-themed tunes that came with her previous couple of records. She also handed over the producing reigns to fellow singer/songwriter/producer Joe Henry. There are some really excellent tunes on this record, including "Seeing Eye Dog," "Sunday Morning," and "Studying Stones."
In contrast to Educated Guess, which was more stripped-down, intimate, and introspective, this album is kind of like the blimp-view version of DiFranco's songs. This could be because of Henry's work on the disc, or it could be from a conscious creative decision. Nonetheless, it comes across as a more objective collection of tunes. Some highlights include "Lag Time" and "Parameters."
