Commonly referred to as the first breakup record, or "the one where she started talking more about being with men than women," Dilate is an interesting turning point album. For one thing, it started the whole era of people screaming their heads off all the way through Ani's shows. It was hard to hear what she was playing in those days. Thankfully for those of us who dig her because of her music, that's died down.
This was also the first record that wasn't markedly chock full of protest and political songs. Dilate was pretty much all about falling in and out of love and the stickiness of doing so ungracefully. Some really great songs are in here, though, including "Untouchable Face" (aka the f*** you song), "Joyful Girl" (an answer to all the "angry girl" accusations, no doubt), a really interesting (in a good way) version of "Amazing Grace," and "Done Wrong," among others.
