Canon is not the first album in Ani DiFranco's catalog that could be considered a collection of her greatest hits, but it's certainly the one most intended for that purpose. Now, nearly 20 years into her recording career, DiFranco collects 36 of the most notable songs of her career. What's remarkable about DiFranco that most other artists can't boast, is that this extensive greatest hits collection features exactly zero top-selling singles or radio hits. The songs contained on this record are "greatest hits" based on DiFranco's live performances of them throughout the years.
Most impressive are the five songs that DiFranco re-arranged and re-recorded with her most recent band of back-up players (Allison Miller on drums, Todd Sickafoose on bass). "Shameless" and "Napoleon" are performed solo on electric guitar, while "Your Next Bold Move," "Both Hands" and "Overlap" are exquisitely re-arranged to take advantage of not only Sickafoose and Miller's skills, but also the considerably more sophisticated arranging skills DiFranco has acquired since the originals were recorded.
Also included are live versions of "Gravel" and "Joyful Girl" and instrumental interludes from Revelling/Reckoning.
