Although it didn't feature what have become Ani DiFranco's highly tuned producer skills, her 1990 debut album is still well worth a listen. Try to ignore the hissing esses (probably not as hard to do for people who aren't musicians themselves), and what you'll find are a dozen plus songs about love, observation, editorial, and urgency.
This record features the classics "Both Hands," "Fire Door" and "Out of Habit," as well as some incredibly crafty guitar work from the young Ms. Difranco.
