If you're going to get someone to write an entire album grappling face-first with mortality, I guess you couldn't ask for a better songwriter than Kris Kristofferson. Indeed, on his first full album of original songs in four years, Kristofferson tangles with life's greatest climax, with the most artful, thoughtful, direct, and honest approach. He stares in the mirror wondering how he got to this place - in the good and bad way, and in other ways. He considers the utility of life and how he's tackled that in years past. He sings about love and glory, failure and fear. And at the end of it all, he pays tribute to a great old friend on "Ramblin' Jack."
Feeling Mortal is sure to be one of the best musical accomplishments in American folk music this year. It's early to call that, I know, but wait til you hear it. Here's my full review.
