From their college days, picking through jam sessions at mandolinist Mike Guggino's hill country cabin to their worldwide tours as the backing band for comedian, actor, author, and banjo master Steve Martin, to recording with Paul McCartney and the Dixie Chicks (with Steve Martin), to their nomination for a Best Bluegrass Album Grammy nomination for 2012's Nobody Knows You...it's safe to say the Steep Canyon Rangers have had a somewhat charmed career. All the while, they've managed to retain their traditional bluegrass audience, even as they've reached outside the genre for collaborative work and, now and then, inspiration.
Did I also mention they have their own music festival in Brevard, NC, which has spawned a cruise of the same name? (Yes, on a boat, on the ocean, in the Caribbean, with bluegrass music.) The Mountain Song Cruise will feature them, David Grisman, the Punch Brothers, and many more in Feb. 2013, about a week and a half before they head to the Grammy Awards to see if they've won. Sounds like a charmed way to start another charmed year for one of the best bands in contemporary bluegrass. Learn more about the Steep Canyon Rangers with this bio and profile.
