Today, July 10, 2012, is Arlo Guthrie's 65th birthday. It's a great precursor to his father's 100th birthday which is coming up in a few days. Before we get all into that, though, take some time to enjoy Arlo's music today.
Arlo Guthrie was the next most obvious torch-bearer for the Guthrie family legacy once his father Woody passed in 1967. Indeed, that's the year the younger Guthrie released what would become known as one of his most famous albums of his career - Alice's Restaurant. Marking a clear departure from his father's artfully simplistic storytelling songs, Guthrie delivered one of the most complicated (and sarcastic) tales attempted in contemporary music. Though he has, through the years, unleashed a plethora of historically appropriate numbers and topical songs, Arlo Guthrie is an altogether different songwriter from Woody. If you're unfamiliar so far, check out these essential Arlo Guthrie songs and make yourself a mix.

How could you not mention The Strange Tale of Ruben Clamso, from Arlo’s wonderful, yet seldom mentioned album, One Night. Classic Arlo, at his best. A worth listen indeed.
