Tift Merritt has been on the singer-songwriter scene for about ten years now, averaging about one album every other year. She's shared bills in the U.S. and overseas with some of the finest artists in the Americana/roots/folk world, including Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and countless others. Plus, she's earned three Americana Music Award nominations and one Grammy nom for her album Tambourine. Yet, somehow, she's still not a household name outside of a certain niche community.
Perhaps that'll change this year, as Yep Roc has announced her fifth studio album, Traveling Alone is due out on that label later this fall (October, to be exact). As contemporary folk fans already familiar with Tift's work mark their calendars, now is a great time for those of you as yet unfamiliar to become acquainted. Check out my profile of Tift Merritt and then spend some of your summer with her tunes on the stereo. Trust me, they go well with the weather.
