Pete Seeger Is Turning 90, Everyone Wants to Pay Tribute

By March 18, 2009

Follow me on:

Pete SeegerBillboard reported today on a series of concerts and tributes in honor of 90 years of Pete Seeger, who begins his tenth decade on May 3. There are a number of concerts to mark the occasion, but perhaps the two most notable are the show Seeger himself will be playing with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy at the Beacon Theater (a benefit for Seeger's Clearwater organization) on March 28, and one on Seeger's birthday at Madison Square Garden, featuring Bela Fleck, Bruce Cockburn, Tony Trischka, and others (ticket info is available here).

Also, the annual Clearwater Festival, which takes place June 20-21 in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, will likely spend much of that weekend paying tribute to the legend. Performances are scheduled by Old Crow Medicine Show, Alejandro Escovedo, Arlo Guthrie, Richie Havens, and others. For more information on the festival line-up and tickets, visit the Clearwater Festival Web site. For more on Seeger's contributions to American folk music, keep it here. I'll be writing a long article on that very subject for publication closer to his actual birthday. No reason to get all sappy about things just yet. In the meantime, here's a look at Pete Seeger's best songs, in my opinion.
