Best Kung Fu–Folk Music Video of the Year

Wednesday November 28, 2007
Old Time Group Uncle EarlThe gals of Uncle Earl aren't just a crew of ladies at the fore of a new old time music revival anymore. Now they can add "Kung Fu masters" to their repertoire, as you can see from the video for their rendition of "Streak o' Lean, Streak o' Fat." The tune is an old timey folk standard recorded in 1930 by the great A.A. Gray, and reprised by numerous other artists since, including Uncle Earl on this year's Waterloo, Tennessee CD.

I personally wouldn't automatically think of putting the fiddle tune in the context of a kung fu film, but somehow it works. Hanging out in a saloon, the g'Earls are challenged to a clogging contest by a troupe that looks like they stepped off the set of Bring it On. Answering the challenge, the quartet take to their instruments and fiddle-tune their way to victory. I won't ruin the storyline by saying any more than that....Watch the Video for "Streak o' Lean, Streak o' Fat"

Speaking of Uncle Earl, they'll be heading out on tour in January making eight stops, as follows:

Ram's Head Tavern, Annapolis, MD—Jan. 16
