Woody Guthrie Asch Recordings Volume One CD CoverAttention folks in or around Philly: there's a show coming up that you really don't want to miss. In celebration of their 50th anniversary, the Philadelphia Folk Song Society will hold a monster concert called "In Woody's Words." John Gorka, Tom Paxton, Jonatha Brook, Chris Smither, Sara Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion will perform their selections from these songs.

Until his death 40 years ago, Woody Guthrie managed to write thousands of songs, many of which are still being discovered, and many of them are just lyrics whose music Guthrie never wrote down. Over the past few years, his daughter Nora, who runs the Woody Guthrie Archives, has been working to get those songs written and worked into the repertoires of contemporary folksingers and others inspired by the life and work of Woody Guthrie.

Says Nora, "The songs in this performance will be chosen by each of the musicians....Woody wrote songs on every topic—from love songs....to political songs, to children’s songs, to historical ballads, to bawdy songs....in that sense, the lyrics that these musicians will be performing, say as much about them—their lives and their interests, their loves, their politics, their kids, their neighborhoods, etc.—as anything Woody said about himself.”

This sounds like it's going to be a really great show, and it'll take place on December 16, 2007, at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia.
