The Weavers to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Sunday January 22, 2006
Legenday Folk ensemble The Weavers will receive recognition for Lifetime Achievement from the Grammy Awards at this year's ceremony. The Weavers, whose line-up included singer/songwriter Pete Seeger, had an unfortunately brief career, which ended after they were brought in front of the House Commitee on Un-American Activities during the "Red Scare" of the 1950s.

During their short career, the Weavers managed to inspire and incite an entire generation into Folk Music Mania, and to popularize a lot of old labor songs and other Folk classics. Aside from the fact that the Weavers' appreciation is long overdue, this could actually mean that Seeger and his former bandmates will get to grace the stage during the telecast, bringing the rarely-afforded spotlight on our Folkie brothers and sisters. Huzzah!

Another Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to the late, great blues legend Robert Johnson. Which, of course, is long overdue as well (Johnson died nearly 70 years ago). The Grammys will be televised on CBS February 8 at 8 PM EST & PT.
