Salute to Folk Radio

Friday October 28, 2005
Considering the non-commerciality of so many Folk artists and songs, it's always such a wonderful thing to know we can count on our Folk and Bluegrass radio stations, radio shows, and DJs. Of course public radio is a great resource for Folk and other non-commercially-based forms of music. Here in Seattle, KUOW and KBCS offer great programming for fans of Folk, Bluegrass, and Old Time. WFUV in New York City is a huge supporter of independent artists of all types. WFUV also hosts a free summer concert series in downtwon Manhattan, featuring an impressive list of artists each year. Chicago's WDCB Public Radio features Folk artists, and includes a weekly show called "Folk Festival." In Portland, OR, there's KBOO. Boston has WUMB, and there's WWOZ in New Orleans. These are just a few of my personal picks. Other stations like these support Folk, Bluegrass, Old Time, and other non-commercial artforms all over the country. Many of them are listener-supported public radio stations. A great resource for Folk Radio online is here. If your community doesn't offer Folk radio, check out one of the links above, and you can stream it live.

On Tuesday, October 30, from 7-9 p.m. central, and streaming online with excellent digital audio at http://www.wdcb.org, 90.9fm WDCB Public Radio’s “Folk Festival” Show will present its oh-so-scary Halloween Edition, “Folk Apparitions”, and a special live performance by Great Lakes singer-songwriter, Lee Murdock. It will be a hauntingly good time!
